Squeeze-Type Resistance Welding – What Do the Experts Say? Print E-mail

General Motors has a bulletin regarding STRSW as an alternative to MIG plug welding for Hummer models (#03-08-98-002A issued 10/11/04.

Chrysler published a 24-page welding and weld bonding technical guide describing STRSW methods and recommending STRSW with weld bonding. MIG welding is applicable to “sheet metal repairs…where STRSW is not available or practical and truck frame repairs.” (81-170-03005)

Ford published a technical bulletin regarding weld bonding that says in part “technicians performing repairs must use approved STRSW machines. MIG welding should only be performed when areas to be welded cannot be accessed using STRSW machinery.”

Toyota’s Winter 2007 issue of  “Collision Pros” says that “the proper use of STRSW can be tremendously time-efficient and can be used to perform welds that meet Toyota’s repair standards.”

SAE International™ issued an 11-page bulletin in October 2004 (SAE J2667) regarding STRSW equipment acceptance criteria for the collision repair industry. This bulletin gives a very thorough description of the definitions, equipment minimum requirements, and equipment performance requirements.

I-CAR has updated the popular WCS04  Squeeze Type Resistance Spot Welding live class. This class includes operation of the STRSW machine. OEM application, set-up of machine and panels, weld bonding application and set-up, test welds and destructive testing, and choosing a resistance welder.
